Spinal Locks Overview
Neck cranks and spinal locks are often prohibited in BJJ competitions due to the severe risk of injury to the spinal cord, vertebrae, and supporting ligaments.
Spinal locks are some of the most dangerous submissions because of the potential for permanent injury. They should be practiced with extreme caution and only under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Many competitions outlaw spinal locks unless in advanced divisions or submission-only rulesets.
