Collar Drag

The Collar Drag is a dynamic Movement Mechanics used to off-balance and redirect an opponent's momentum, often leading to a sweep, back take, or takedown. It leverages Grip Fighting, Angles, and Momentum to create an opening for positional advancement. This technique is highly effective from positions such as Seated Guard, Butterfly Guard, or standing exchanges.

Key Concepts of the Collar Drag

Establish the Collar Grip

Secure a Cross Collar Grip with one hand, gripping deep into the opponent’s collar to maintain strong Connections. The opposite hand often posts or grips the opponent's arm or sleeve for additional control.

Create Angles

Shift your hips to one side to align your Angles for the drag. This helps in redirecting the opponent's momentum and making their Base vulnerable.

Drag the Collar

Pull the collar diagonally across your body with explosive force, aiming to bring the opponent’s upper body forward and off their Center of Gravity. Simultaneously, move your hips back to amplify the effect.

Utilize Momentum

As the opponent stumbles forward or to the side, use their compromised position to execute a follow-up technique such as a Back Take, Takedown, or transition into Guard control.

Capitalize on the Advantage

Transition smoothly into a dominant position, such as Back Control, Side Control, or Guard retention, depending on the context of the movement.

The Collar Drag is an excellent tool for creating opportunities in both offensive and defensive scenarios. Its success relies heavily on proper timing, precise Grip Fighting, and the ability to exploit an opponent's Momentum.
