Bridge and Roll

The Bridge and Roll is a fundamental Movement Mechanic in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu used for escaping bottom positions, such as Mount Bottom, by leveraging power from the hips and Angles to destabilize and reverse the opponent. This movement combines principles of Frames, Base, and Momentum to create an effective escape that places you in a more advantageous position.

Key Concepts of Bridge and Roll

Create a Connection

Establish a strong Connection with your opponent by trapping one of their arms and isolating their leg on the same side. This prevents them from posting and countering your movement.

Trap the Leg

Use your foot on the same side to hook or block their leg, ensuring they cannot widen their Base to resist the roll.

Set the Angle

Bridge at an angle rather than straight up to maximize Leverage. This helps direct the force of the roll in the desired direction.

Generate Power with the Hips

Perform a powerful upward bridge, lifting your hips high off the ground. This Momentum destabilizes their Base.

Roll Over

As you bridge, turn towards the side where you’ve trapped the arm and leg, rolling the opponent off of you and reversing the position.

Establish Top Position

Complete the roll by landing in a dominant position such as Mount, Guard, or Side Control, depending on the situation.

The Bridge and Roll is highly effective against opponents who rely on Pressure in top positions. It is a staple escape technique, offering both defensive and offensive opportunities to regain control of the fight.
